INSTALLATION OF SFI FLUID DAMPER

FIRST STEP: TOOLS AND PROCEDURES
1. Proper damper installation tool required, hammers not recommended. See C.A.T. part # HBP-1000
2. Make sure damper has the SFI serial number and C.A.T. Logo and part number engraved on outer ring.
3. Make sure no sticky fluid (not preserve) appears on the surface. If possible place damper upside down for 24 hours to ensure there is no silicone leaking from the inertia ring shell. All dampers are leak proof tested in factory but damage can occur during shipping. Return to dealer if leaking.
4. A press fit of 0.0005” to 0.0015” is required for proper fitment of damper unto crankshaft. If possible, with and micrometer measure crankshaft snout and damper hub id for proper sizing. Excessive tolerance, too much press or not enough, may lead to cracking of the damper hub.

SECOND STEP: BALANCING & INSTALLATION
1. Do not balance assembly with the fluid style damper on assembly. The floating inertia ring will provide a false reading if left on crankshaft. For externally balanced engines remove the outer ring from hub and then balance.
2. For externally balanced put the outer ring back on the hub after balancing. Torque the ferry cap screws back to proper foot pounds.
HBF-400(C) 38 foot pounds
HBF-454(C) 50 foot pounds
HBF-302(C) & HBF-302HO(C) 28 foot pounds
3. Remove burrs, nicks, and sharp edges on damper snout. Do not hone the inside bore of crank hub, this will void warranty. Use emery cloth if necessary.
4. Apply an anti-seize compound on crankshaft snout and in the damper hub.
5. Install damper with proper installation tool. Do not hammer the damper on, this will void the warranty.
6. Install damper bolt and washer to proper torque:
Small Block Chevy 70 foot pounds
Big Block Chevy 110 foot pounds
Ford 110 foot pounds
Mopar 150 foot pounds
Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick 160 foot pounds
7. Check the timing mark to ensure it is to your engine’s specification.
8. Install pulleys onto damper with damper or pulley mandrel. If mandrel is not used this could lead to side loads on the crankshaft. If necessary drill new bolt holes in pulley, do not drill holes in damper this will cause the damper to leak and will void the warranty.
* The HBF-455(C) does not match stock damper pulley holes. The pulley should be rotated about 45?
And predrilled to fit the damper.
* The HBF-390(C) require aftermarket pulley. See March Performance’s part #1971 for 1V Pulley, part#1973 for 2V pulley, part# 1975 for 3 V pulley.
9. Hand turn crank to ensure no wobble on damper or pulley.
