INSTALLATION OF SFI STEEL STRUCTURE ELASTIC DAMPER

 

1ST STEP: TOOLS AND PROCEDURES
1. Proper damper installation tool required, hammers not recommended. See C.A.T. part# HBP-1000.
2. Make sure damper has the SFI serial number and C.A.T. logo and part number engraved on outer ring.
3. A press fit of 0.0005” to 0.0015” is required for proper fitment of damper onto crankshaft. If possible with a micrometer measure crankshaft snout and damper hub id for proper sizing. Excessive tolerance, too much press or not enough, may lead to cracking of the damper hub.


2nd STEP: INSTALLATION
1. Remove burrs, nicks, and sharp edges on damper snout. Do not hone the inside bore of crank hub, this will void the warranty. Use emery cloth if necessary. Inspect crank snout for burrs or rust. If needed, polish the snout.
2. Apply an anti-seize compound on crankshaft snout and damper hub.
3. Install damper with proper installation tool. Do not hammer damper on, this will void the warranty.
4. Install damper bolt and washer to proper torque:
Small Block Chevy70 Foot Pounds
Big Block Chevy 110 foot pounds
Ford 110 Foot Pounds
Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick 160 Foot Pounds
5. Check timing marks to ensure it is to your engine’s specifications.
6. Install pulleys onto damper with damper or pulley mandrel. If mandrel is not used this could lead to side loads on the crankshaft.
7. Hand turn crank to ensure no wobble on damper or pulley.
