1. Disconnect Battery
2. Drain coolant. Thoroughly clean entire cooling system, engine cavity,
and gasket surface. Always dispose of coolant according to EPA requlations.
3. Check hoses, clamps, and radiator. If any sign of fatigue replace or
repair.
4. Remove belts and fan. If any sign of fatigue on belts and/or fan replace.
5. Position new gaskets on pump using sealer on both sides.
6. Carefully install new water pump. DO NOT STRIKE SHAFT! Hand tighten
pump bolts, then torque the bolts to OEM specifications in a criss-cross
pattern.
7. Turn pump shaft by hand to make sure it turns freely.
8. Inspect thermostat and radiator cap. Replace if they show any sign
of sticking or leaking.
9. Reconnect the hoses. Reinstall belts and fan. Refer to owner’s
manual or OEM instructions for any special procedures.
10. Refill the cooling system and check for leaks.
11. Check fan pulley (or fan clutch, if used) to ensure it sits square
on pump hub. Use lock washers and torque bolts evenly to assure wobble-free
operation.
12. Rotate the fan by hand to inspect for wobbles. Maximum to be 3/32”
at the outer edge if no clutch, ¼” with a clutch.
13. Adjust fan belts to proper tension, using a tension gauge. Refer to
OEM specifications. Or adjust the belts for a deflection of ½”
to ¾”. Inspect any defective automatic tensioner or idler
pulley. Automatic tensioners will normally tighten with use.
14. Check blade tip clearances to the radiator and any shroud.
15. Check any electric cooling fan to insure it is working properly.
16. Inspect motor mounts. Replace if any sign of fatigue. Tighten any
loose bolts.
17. Start engine and let it run until normal operating temperature is
reached. Check for any leaks and smooth operation. Never stand in front
of engine while revving it. The hood should be closed when revving the
engine for your own protection.
18. Turn engine off and check for leaks.
